Objectives:
After this class, students will be able to:
1. show enthusiasm for a topic/subject of their choosing.
2. give examples of nonverbal communication and how it compares to speaking.
3. share personal opinions and listen to those of others.
Agenda:
1. Warm-Up: In their notebooks, students should answer the following questions: What do you know about the Hollywood writers' strike? Do you think that talk show hosts and actors need writers, or are they good enough speakers on their own? Ms. Kingsbury will solicit students for their answers.
2. Today's Vocabulary:
a. Enthusiasm: expressing your excitement and passion which shows a love for your topic
b. Emotional Appeal: choosing certain words or phrases to stimulate emotions in your audience; example - if you want to make your audience feel sad, you might talk about orphans in Africa or kittens that have been abandoned
c. Nonverbal Communication: when you communicate without using any words at all
3. Speech Activity: Today we will finish our speeches. Topics include "I'm An Expert," "It's Not Fair," and "My Beliefs." Each speech is worth 50 points.
Homework: There is no homework scheduled for this class tonight.
